I just did a full test:
opened https://github.com/cellfusion/LESS.sugar
repository downloaded as zip
unzipped
renamed folder to cellfusion-LESS.sugar
double-clicked
allow restart of Espresso
opened style.less
and it works.

Where has been your’s mistake?

I was downloading the LESS.sugar direct from the header of the Git page, not downloading and then renaming the zip!

I don’t see a download button in the header of project page. http://cl.ly/BkKh ← only «↓ zip»
On downloads page are two buttons with similliar content http://cl.ly/Bk7U

When you visit the repo page the title in blue (e.g. LESS.sugar /) is a link to the repo. I was downloading it from there (e.g save target as) once the LESS.sugar downloaded to the desktop I was double clicking the LESS.sugar to install. Does that make sense?
